Brandon Newhouse opened Kwik Key in September, 2016, offering mobile automotive locksmithing services on location.
Why did you start this business? I started Kwik Key because mobile automotive locksmithing is my passion and Walworth County has a lack of mobile automotive locksmithing. I love computers, technology and locksmithing and all of these are equally present in my line of work. More than 95 percent of cars today use transponder technology to prevent car theft. This technology is in the keys themselves and in the vehicle’s computer.
How did you get into this line of work? I started out learning general locksmithing, and as soon as I learned about the automotive aspect, I knew that was exactly what I wanted to do. There isn’t much information about this type of work, but I pieced a lot together from technical manuals, online forums and certified training in Kentucky at Lockmasters Institute.
What types of products or services does your business offer? My services include programming and cloning transponder keys, originating a key if all keys have been lost, key duplication, door and ignition lock repair and opening any vehicle on the road, damage free.
All my services are mobile; I drive to wherever the customer is, anytime of day or night.
What has been the biggest challenge in your business? The cost of equipment and getting the word out about my services. The tools are expensive and some cost money each time you use them. My business wouldn’t have been possible without my loving and trusting girlfriend’s immense help and support.
What aspect of the business do you enjoy most? I enjoy it all. I love being able to use my skills to help people out of an emergency situation. Every mobile automotive locksmithing job is a new and unique situation, and I meet a lot of interesting people in some pretty wild situations.
From what cities do your customers come? All of Dane County and some surrounding areas like Milwaukee and South Eastern Wisconsin.
What are your plans for the business? To have a thriving, locally owned and trustworthy business that serves the residents of Madison. There are a lot of scamming locksmith companies around and a lot of franchise-owned, corporate companies out there.
I want to offer my services to the residents and businesses of Madison and have them know there is someone to call who is on their side in an emergency.
